Yes, it’s been a while…

June 28, 2022

It’s all about the signs.

A few health issues around the family have prevented me from finding the old keyboard, but I’m back after spending the weekend in and around LA. I learned, among other things, that when people are marching for a cause, they WANT to have their picture taken despite the fact that they don’t know (or perhaps even care) who the photographer is shooting for. In this case, it was myself but they didn’t ask, so I didn’t tell. These shots are the beginning of the march that grew to around 400 people. Since it’s all about the message, get in close for clarity of sign lettering (almost always by hand) and expressions.

It’s still all about the signs.

Gray Days = Great Flower Light

ISO 250, f14@250, 95mm macro lens

Yesterday (8.7) was gray with more than enough rain here around the old camera clubhouse. Fortunately, we had the greenhouses at the Chicago Botanic Garden for a backup plan since the Sunday morning Composition class was rained in. The sun made a cameo appearance towards the end of the afternoon so I was able to get outside with macro lens, tripod and a faithful camera. Since the sun had what, I must assume, was a short-term contract the actual happiness continued since gray days are perfect for visually exploring color shadings texture. Slow down, dial in an ISO of around 200 and f 11 or 14 and use manual focus. If ever a tripod was your friend, you can count on that happening now.

f14 @ 160, 95mm macro focal length The sun dropped by for a moment.

150mm, f14 @ 125 If you time it right, the rain water will still be waiting for you.

About Jack

A classically trained musician since childhood, Jack Carlson always had the “ear” of an artist. It was only a short step to develop the artist’s “eye” as well.

The portfolio of this certified photographer reveals images that emphasize mood and composition. Their purpose is to present a feeling in addition to portrayal of person, place or thing. Sometimes that feeling is nostalgia; other times it is serenity.

Each photograph tells a story.
