Use high ISO for a smaller aperture setting

May 20, 2025

ISO 800, f4.5 @ 1/13 shutter speed, Strasbourg Cathedral

I was walking inside two Strasbourg Cathedral using a camera without flash. The problem was that the light level was really too low for anything less than an ISO setting of 800 so I dialed it in to get a smaller aperture of f4.5. This extended the shutter speed to 1/13 second which worked out since I found a chair for a camera support. For the organ pipes, I opened the lens to f1.6 to add light for an ISO of 200 and a shutter speed of 1/80. If you’re an low available light photographer, get a fast lens. I did.
