Zoom lenses have a place in the camera bag of most photographers. The longer the zoom range, the more likely the lens could use any type of support. When shooting with a fixed focal length (as here) choices of image size are limited.

Keep a wide range of focal lengths with you–even when just driving to or from work/class/sight-seeing, since you don’t know what setting you might need with only a moment’s notice. Quite recently, I had just begun to drive back from a class at the Chicago Botanic Garden when I decided to pull over to get a snap or two of the Japanese Islands for the class that begins on Sunday, September 12. I began with a wide (18mm) view. Then I heard them coming in for a landing and tried to quickly change to a longer lens. Couldn’t do it in time. I lucked
