Small Subject? Fill the Frame & Diffuse your flash

September 15, 2022

Not enough lens or light. 70mm, F8 @ 125 ISO 250, no flash

I spotted this green “walking stick” in a hedge near the 3C (aka Carlson Camera Clubhouse) so just had to take a picture. As you can see, a 70mm focal length certainly was not enough lens. The shot also suffers from lack of light. YES, even pictures of creatures like this one can benefit from a bit of diffused light that’s stopped down. Don’t go blasting away with untempered flash then wonder why disappointment abounds. Remember the See-Think-Act school of photography. If you’re not familiar with it, why not take a class.

Focal length nearly doubled & diffused flash added
130mm, F16@60, flash at -1 1/3.
