Shoot wide open when you wouldn’t think to do so

September 12, 2022

ISO 800, f2.8 @ 320, 200mm focal length

When two people are in the same scene but one is clearly the dominant subject, open your lens all the way (widest aperture) and manually focus on the person closest to the camera. Remember to check the WB camera setting, too. Shooting this way lets the viewer know what’s going on as in this photo I took at the special event that celebrated the first 50 years of Those Were the Days. This is a radio show devoted to old radio shows (aka OTR) that’s on every Saturday afternoon from 1-5 pm on WDCB, 90.9 and wdcb.org. This shot features Amanda Wolff backed by Jon Kostal Sr. on the Telecaster. Both are members of The Flat Cats.
