Selecting the Right Focal Length

January 12, 2022

Low light: 28mm, f1.4 @ 1/4 sec. ISO 2560

Students in the new Saturday Beginning Digital class raised the “how much lens is enough or not enough” during last Saturday’s class. How much lens is “Jack speak” for the focal length that’s appropriate for the subject. That said, “too much lens” will not include enough area surrounding the subject. If you ever hear (or say) “I don’t have enough lens” the meaning is the focal length is just too short for the subject to photographer distance. Thought I would include some examples of focal length choices based on the subject I was about to photograph.

Wide Angle:  18mm, f22 @ 1/80, ISO 80

It’s easier to determine which lenses to bring on a shoot if you’ve decided on the subject(s) before leaving home. Check out your image library to find the subject(s) you have photographed most often. Then decide if you currently own a lens that’s best for your favorite subjects. If you would like help in making a purchase decision.

Macro: 180mm, f20 @ 1/60, ISO 80, Off-camera flash

Telephoto: 400mm, f4 @ 100, ISO 640, Tripod w/gimbal head
