Same scene: Try Different light levels

September 4, 2021

Flash close to lotus. Tripod helps focusing.

I got to the lotus just before closing time this afternoon so I could set up the tripod, lens and flash. You know a tripod is life in the photo slow lane, but certainly worth it. I was able to get several shots by altering both camera settings and light output from the flash. One of the easiest ways to change the amount of light falling on any subject is to increase the flash/subject distance. Of course this requires an off-camera (aka external) flash and cord or wireless trigger. Allow enough time and go for the differences. Here’s the info on both images.  The Bright Shot: Camera– ISO 250, f22 @ 1/200, 140mm lens, Flash– -1 1/3 underexposure, 18 inches from lotus, Stofen diffuser.

Reduce light for impressionist feel.

The Subdued Shot: Camera–ISO 80,f22 @1/250, 180mm lens, Flash– 11/3 underexposure, 27 inches from lotus, flash head pointed 45 degrees from subject. Allow enough time and don’t rush. This exercise will have extremes of happiness and disappointment so be prepared.
