How to add a “Sun Star” to your image

October 9, 2019

Sun-star: A cheap, in-camera effect.

Many students have seen a “sun star” in a class powerpoint. Maybe you’re one of them. Well, the question always arises: “What do I need to buy to get this effect?”  The answer is: nothing. Not, no answer, but just a dial down of the lens to our old friend f22.  Compose the shot first by finding a subject that will permit the sun to be included. Then dial down to f22. Meter about 45 degrees from the sun, then return the sun to the scene and push the button. Look at the sun for just a very short time. Be prepared for the lens flare that’s usually included at no charge. Will it work every time? Probably not, so keep trying. Once you get it, you’ll run the risk of over-using it, so think of it as a spice.
