Fireworks benefit from Manual Focus

July 2, 2019

Keep shutter open for multiple bursts

Lots of questions come my way about the most appropriate camera settings for fireworks photography. Here’s what works for me. Remember that there is trial and error involved and that you can’t/won’t get every explosion. While you can’t photograph every blast, you will have a blast getting the pictures.

Fireworks Photo Suggestions

1. Use: tripod, cable or remote shutter release, wide to medium focal length lens

2.  Starter Camera Settings: ISO 200, F11, Bulb Shutter Speed, Manual Focus on infinity, WB full sun, 20-35mm focal length

Add people with wide lens

3.  Use the shutter release cable to hold the shutter open for the length of the burst, then release. Try holding the shutter open for more than one blast to get a great multiple-exposure image.

4. Set up in advance so you can begin photographing as soon as the show starts. Getting the initial fireworks will have more color that won’t be clouded by smoke from multiple blasts that happen later in the program.

5.  Be ready for grand finale by using horizontal perspective.

Keep shutter open for the big finish.
