Bounce a bit of light on to a White flower

March 18, 2024

Orchid in natural light.180mm, F9@60, ISO 400.

We’ve just been photographing orchids in the classes for the Chicago Botanic Garden Orchid Show. Some of the flowers are white so students decided no additional light was either needed or required to make these orchids look their best. While natural light is often good by itself, more times than you might imagine, it needs a boost. It’s then when I add a kicker that’s often bounced. Remember that the larger the bounce card (or surface) the softer the light will be. Start with 1 1/3 under exposure on light output.
