NEW! Orchid Show ’22 Classes Return

Orchid Class 2020 students find a subject, then find the angle

Great news: Winter ’22 classes finalized and Orchid Show classes return! After going on holiday for 2021, the highly-anticipated CBG Orchid Show photo classes are set for 3 Tuesdays, February 15 – March 1  OR  3 Sundays, February 27 – March 13. These classes begin at 8 am so we can bring tripods into the show areas. Both days will fill fast so register as soon as they are listed on the CBG website for the listings. You won’t want to miss a chance to capture all the frame-filling, floral fun that’s packed into each meeting of the Orchids Class.

Orchids come in all shapes and sizes.

Weekly Photo Tip

Filters can make a difference

18mm, f8 @ 1/30, no filter

18mm, f8 @ 1/80 with 3-stop ND Grad

I received a 3-stop, soft-edge ND grad filter from the Camera Clubhouse cats. They decided to purchase from Breakthrough Photography since I mentioned that one of my students brought Breakthrough Filters to a recent class and, on inspection, the filters seemed to be very well made. An ND Grad filter starts dark and fades to clear so the placement of the dark portion is determined by both the bright part of the scene and the photographer. This filter made quite a difference in holding down the sun in the upper part of the image. Check out the “no-filter” image and ND Grad image. The difference will amaze you.
