Students on the Volo Bog boardwalk.
Our time at Volo Bog was as good as we wanted it to be thanks to a sunny morning and a wonderful guided tour presented by Abby, the IDNR Naturalist who lead our group. Walking along the boardwalks is actually walking through time since, she explained, it takes more time than anyone would imagine for decomposition to happen. There are many places to photograph small-scale leaves, berries and small animal trails so students took time to photograph these bits of autumn color as we proceeded to everyone’s favorite spot: the Eye of the Bog. Polarizing filters were certainly appropriate for the bog area and in heavy use, just as the pre-class handout advised.

Special recognition and thanks go to Stacy, the IDNR Naturalist who informed us that she will be retiring from her position at Volo and other places in March of 2026. She made each of our class visits most enjoyable through classroom setup and presentation in addition to leading the tour in some years.
