Classes are GO!

September 26, 2023

Hi Everyone,

Take the guesswork out of camera controls in the Beginning Digital Class.

Yes,it’s been some time since I added anything to the site, but as you know, sometimes life isn’t digital. To bring you up to date, the Beginning Digital class (aka Intro) starts this Saturday (9.30) with more students enrolled than we’ve had in years. I’ve been busy making folders and copying my future classes list to distribute (we don’t pass out unless we’ve actually passed out) during our first meeting. Will be great fun, and with 12 people, just think of the BROWNIEFEST we will have.

Yes, Illinois Beach State Park is for the birds. Just ask this student.

Speaking of the ‘fest, there’s one happening tomorrow (9.27) for the final meeting of the State Parks class. We’ve discovered many interesting photo ops in our exploration of Illinois Beach and Moraine Hills State Parks. Last week we also drove to the McHenry Dam where the moving water was perfect for shutter speed/ND filter practice. Some students even discovered the need for a new tripod.

There’s room in the Photographing Trees in Autumn Color class which starts October 6 for 4 Fridays. All of these classes are at the CBG. Why not take a few “personal days” and join us.

Join us for Photographing Trees in Autumn Color.

The new Autumn Macro class is really close to max cap for enrollment. Yes, it meets on 3 Wednesdays (starts October 11) but the fun factor will be off-the-chart. Only a few spots open.

NEW! Macro in Autumn starts October 11. It’s almost full.

All classes are at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Visit www.chicagobotanic.org/adulted. Then scroll down to the photography section. Hope to see you soon in a class or two.

Think dry thoughts.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Jack

Weekly Photo Tip

Filters can make a difference

18mm, f8 @ 1/30, no filter

18mm, f8 @ 1/80 with 3-stop ND Grad

I received a 3-stop, soft-edge ND grad filter from the Camera Clubhouse cats. They decided to purchase from Breakthrough Photography since I mentioned that one of my students brought Breakthrough Filters to a recent class and, on inspection, the filters seemed to be very well made. An ND Grad filter starts dark and fades to clear so the placement of the dark portion is determined by both the bright part of the scene and the photographer. This filter made quite a difference in holding down the sun in the upper part of the image. Check out the “no-filter” image and ND Grad image. The difference will amaze you. Please note: I have no affiliation with Breakthrough Photography and chose them only based on student referral.

About Jack

A classically trained musician since childhood, Jack Carlson always had the “ear” of an artist. It was only a short step to develop the artist’s “eye” as well.

The portfolio of this certified photographer reveals images that emphasize mood and composition. Their purpose is to present a feeling in addition to portrayal of person, place or thing. Sometimes that feeling is nostalgia; other times it is serenity.

Each photograph tells a story.
