All’s well in Alsace

May 28, 2025

Strasbourg Cathedral: At 466 ft. Tallest building in Europe for 227 yrs.

I recently visited Alsace which is that part of France that has, at times, been German.

A portion of the EU Parliament offices.

The capital city of the region is Strasbourg which is the home of the European Parliament and is located some 23 miles from the German border. The Cathedral in Strasbourg was the tallest structure in Europe for more than 200 years and it’s still amazing to walk around in a a structure that opened in 1439.

Use a fast lens for interior shots.

I brought my personal favorite lens for the trip–28mm, f1.4D–since I knew there would be low light levels inside houses and churches. Over the course of many trips, I’ve learned some things about traveling with a camera: bring only one lens (the faster the better), several batteries and memory cards and no tripod.

Bright colors on original buildings.

Half-timbered houses are almost always within sight so a fairly wide lens will be your friend. Originally these houses were black/white but have been painted rather bright colors for tourists. Either way, it’s great to see these original structures. Yes, contrary to prevailing rumor, there’s lots to see and explore outside of Paris so why not investigate the other parts of France. I did.

Weekly Photo Tip

Keep camera parallel with subject

When colors are dramatically different, you will want to keep the focus sharp across the frame. That’s a bit easier to do when you’re hand-holding the camera to grab a shot of a moving subject. Keep reminding yourself to find–and keep–that parallel for maximum sharpness. It works quite well for small subjects.

About Jack

A classically trained musician since childhood, Jack Carlson always had the “ear” of an artist. It was only a short step to develop the artist’s “eye” as well.

The portfolio of this certified photographer reveals images that emphasize mood and composition. Their purpose is to present a feeling in addition to portrayal of person, place or thing. Sometimes that feeling is nostalgia; other times it is serenity.

Each photograph tells a story.
